Inexplicable Abdominal Pain due to Thoracic Spinal Cord Tumor

چکیده
Chronic, refractory abdominal pain without a metabolic or structural gastroenterological etiology can be challenging for diagnosis and management. Even though it is rare, it has been reported that such a recurrent abdominal pain associated with radicular pattern can be derived from structural neurologic lesion like spinal cord tumor. We experienced an unusual case of chronic recurrent abdominal pain that lasted for two years without definite neurologic deficits in a patient, who has been harboring thoracic spinal cord tumor. During an extensive gastroenterological workup for the abdominal pain, the spinal cord tumor had been found and was resected through surgery. Since then, the inexplicable pain sustained over a long period of time eventually resolved. This case highlights the importance of taking into consideration the possibility of spinal cord tumor in differential diagnosis when a patient complains of chronic and recurrent abdominal pain without other medical abnormalities.

Giant thoracic schwannoma presenting with abrupt onset of abdominal pain: a case report
INTRODUCTION Giant intradural extramedullary schwannomas of the thoracic spine are not common. Schwannomas, that is, tumors derived from neoplastic Schwann cells, and neurofibromas represent the most common intradural extramedullary spinal lesions. We report the case of a patient with a giant thoracic schwannoma presenting unusually with acute abdominal pain and with delayed neurological impair...
متن کاملSpinal Cord Tumors That Present as Chronic Abdominal Pain: Analysis of the Literature
Background: Chronic abdominal pain without a structural or metabolic gastroenterological etiology can be extremely challenging to diagnose and treat. Patients presenting with an associated radicular pattern of pain may alert the clinician to a possible structural neurologic cause of the symptoms. Methods: We present the case of a 70 year old woman who presented to our institution with an 18 mon...
متن کاملA case of endometrial cancer presenting with malignant spinal cord compression
Malignant spinal cord compression (MSCC) rarely presents in patients with endometrial cancer. It usually occurs months or years after the diagnosis of the primary tumor. A 65-year-old woman presented with a huge uterine tumor suspecting leiomyosarcoma. She underwent total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Histopathological examination revealed mixed carcinoma (small ce...

Chronic abdominal wall pain is a well-documented complication of abdominal surgery. However, abdominal wall complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a rare medical condition. We present a case of abdominal wall CRPS and its treatment with peripheral nerve field stimulation (PNfS). A 34-year-old female presented with right periumbilical pain for 2 years. She developed burning, sharp and stabbing...

Summary: Background: Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) usually have permanent and often devastating neurologic deficits and disability and pain (1). According to the National Institutes of Health, "among neurological disorders, the cost to society of automotive SCI is exceeded only by the cost of mental retardation"(2). Neurogenic pain constitutes one of the enigmatic clinical sy...
